HPV & Cervical Cancer

Did you know that every 47 minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with cervical cancer? In the US, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women between the ages of 20 and 39.

The cervix is important during pregnancy. It helps keep the baby in the uterus until the time of delivery. Cervical cancer and its treatment may affect a woman's ability to have a baby.

Cervical cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). There are many types of HPV, but only certain types can cause cervical cancer. HPV is generally passed from person to person through sexual activity. HPV infections are very common, and most women are exposed to HPV when they begin having sex. HPV infections often clear on their own. However, if the infection doesn't clear on its own, over time it could develop into cervical cancer.

Prevention is important because you might be infected with a cancer-causing HPV type and have no symptoms. You may not even know you are infected. This can put you at risk for more serious stages of cervical cancer later on.
